About Johnny
From the Moviola to generative AI.
Johnny Otto’s story began in the film labs of the University of Windsor in Ontario, Canada, where images were still cut by hand and every edit demanded patience, precision, and instinct. He learned his craft on a Steenbeck and a Moviola, physically shaping picture and sound into stories. While he was still a student, Professor Ca Moore recognized that instinct and asked him to teach the film lab, guiding other filmmakers through the fundamentals of editing, lighting, and camera operation. Then, in 1990, Johnny left Canada for Los Angeles with only $600 and an army duffle bag filled with clothes. There was no safety net and no clear path forward, only the conviction that stories could create a life. Two years later, he optioned his first screenplay to legendary producer Joel Silver.
What followed was a career built through constant reinvention. Johnny directed the independent feature Bruised and the mockumentary Bring Me the Head of Walt Disney, along with short films, documentaries, music videos, animation, and branded work. His projects earned recognition from Klasky-Csupo and Animation Magazine’s WACFEST, appeared at film festivals, and were featured in publications including MovieMaker Magazine and LA Weekly. In 2020, he founded Out Draw Animation and created original series including Zombies Whatever, Izzy & Zan, and Sean the Worm. In 2025, after a lifetime of adapting to each new era of filmmaking, he launched OTTO AI, bringing decades of hard-earned storytelling experience to short-form content, branding, and original AI tools such as VOX and XODE. Most recently, he launched OTTO AI Verticals, a new division developing original dramatic series created specifically for the fast, immersive language of vertical storytelling. The technology changed. The mission never did: use every tool available to tell stories people remember.
